FURTIVE ACHE by AMANDA YOUNG

Precious Ache: Falling in love was his biggest mistake...Abandoned as a child, Dave Blanchard learned to be self-reliant at an early age. Puberty brought a distressing attraction to other boys, and an abnormal growth spurt that drove Dave further into his shell. Adulthood granted him the freedom to stand on his own two feet, but cloistered him in a plastic bubble of his own making. At seven and a half feet tall, Dave has no problem finding men for anonymous sex through sleazy backroom romps, but the experiences leave him feeling cold and unsatisfied. He dreams of love and commitment, but finding someone interested in a relationship seems like a pipe dream.

Desperate for companionship, Dave signs up for an online matchmaking service. To his utter embarrassment, his first date never shows, but his luck improves when he runs into a former foster brother, Micah Black.

Dave and Micah quickly rebuild their friendship, but with it comes the resurrection of the forbidden crush Dave harbored for Micah when they were teens. Micah is off limits to Dave, but that doesn't stop Dave's imagination from spinning torrid scenarios involving his straight friend. When Micah's life is threatened, Dave's inhibitions melt away.

Unfortunately, the price of one chaste kiss could mean the end of the friendship Dave wants so badly...

And for the first time in his life, Shawn isn't concentrating on work.

Claire Thompson does it again. In my opinion, she outdid herself with Texas Surrender—it is definitely my new favorite. To quote a line from the book, this story is “hotter than a fresh jalapeño.” I was enthralled from beginning to end; I could not put the book down. I got the tingles, and you can’t give a book a better recommendation that.

JD Reed knows what he wants and he isn’t afraid to go after it. What he wants is Avery Dalton. One look and JD knows just what Avery needs, even better than Avery does.

Of course, one look at JD and Avery immediately brushes him off as nothing more than a useless city boy. But Avery can’t explain away how the man makes him feel with his not-so-subtle remarks about ropes and whips making it very hard for Avery to concentrate on his job. He has an even harder time coming to terms with why the thought of JD tying him up and dominating him turns him on so much. He is not a “sissy boy” and no man is going to dominate him. The relationship between these two men heats up pretty quickly and quite literally, sets the place on fire.

I would not classify this book as BDSM light nor would I call it hard-core. It falls somewhere in between, but it is a romance, through and through.

Texas Surrender releases Tuesday November 10, 2009 at 1 Romance eBooks, so be first in line to buy your copy. You’re not going to want to miss this one, I promise.

Excerpt

"JD, you up there, honey? Avery's ready to show you around."

JD took the stairs two at a time, buttoning his denim work shirt as he went. LuAnn was standing in the front hall, looking small and older than her fifty-eight years. She gestured toward the front door. "Avery's outside."

Out on the porch, Avery slouched, his face partially obscured by the cowboy hat tilted low over his forehead.
He had one foot up against the porch railing, the very picture of a cowboy in repose.
He straightened up when JD approached, disapproval radiating from him like a shimmering mirage. With a grunt, he turned and moved down the porch stairs, looking back with a scowl. "You comin'?"
No hello, no welcome, no nothing. JD shrugged. He enjoyed a challenge, and this guy was going to be one, no question about it.

They walked down the gently sloping hill from the house to the stable and pens, Avery slightly ahead of JD, who made no effort to catch up. Avery was wearing a black T-shirt that hugged his broad shoulders and strained at his bulging biceps. JD liked watching Avery's ass move, and his cock stirred at a fantasy of pushing the cowboy down right there on the dirt road and taking him like a stallion takes a mare.

JD followed him into the main pen, letting the gate latch click shut behind him. "How many horses we got on the ranch these days?" he asked, mainly to make conversation as they walked into the barn.

With a slight toss of his head, Avery answered, "We have fourteen horses right now. The General is our breeding stallion. We have four mares, two geldings, two fillies and three yearlings. Plus Smokey, here." He gestured toward Macy's stall and the colt greedily sucking its mother's teat.

Avery turned toward the pair, his features softening into a gentle smile that made him look suddenly very young. "How old are you?" JD asked without thinking.

The scowl returned as Avery faced him, though it didn't diminish how good looking the cowboy was. He had dark eyes set in a tanned, angular face with prominent cheekbones and several days dark stubble over a firm jaw. His nose was snub, which made him look younger than perhaps he was, and his hair was black and straight, cut short. He wasn't tall, maybe only five foot, nine, but every inch of that appeared to be solid muscle.

"I'm old enough to know better," Avery snapped.

"Yeah? And just what do you know?" JD rejoined.

"I know I've got a ranch to run, and no time to stand around chit-chattin'. So I'll just ask you straight out—you have much experience working around horses?"

JD shrugged. "Some, I guess. I spent a bunch of summers here when I was a teenager. I rode a lot. I helped out some. I'm sure I can learn quick. I mean, how hard can it be?"

Avery shook his head, not replying. He walked past two horses to the last stall, in which stood a regal looking animal, with large bones, a well defined neck and a beautiful coat of pure white, her mane silver in the slanting sunlight.

"Kassie's in heat," Avery said. "I'm going to mate her and the General today, if she'll cooperate." JD looked at the mare, who was pawing anxiously at the dirt, her tail flicking and eyes rolling.

"She looks agitated."

"Yeah. Normally she's sweet as can be. Till the PMS gets her."

"PMS? Horses get that?"

"Pouty Mare Syndrome."

JD laughed. "So what's the procedure? You just put ‘em in a pen and let nature take its course?"

"Sometimes we do, but not Kassie. She's a kicker. She ‘bout killed the General the last time he tried to mount her. The union was, uh, not successful."

"So you're gonna tie her down? Force her to submit?" JD said the words lightly, but he was watching Avery carefully for any reaction to the purposefully provocative words.

Avery angled his body away. "Something like that," he replied, his voice devoid of emotion. He entered Kassie's stall, approaching her slowly, his voice soothing and calm. He stroked her mane with one hand, while slipping the halter over her nose with the other.

Gently, he led the skittish mare out of the stall. "You can muck her stall while she's in the mating pen. You do know how to much a stall, don't you? Everything you need's in the tack room." He gestured toward the side building that was attached to the stable and, without waiting for a reply, walked out, leading Kassie behind him.

JD knew this was his first test. He headed toward the tack room, where he retrieved a pitchfork, a stable broom, a shovel and a wheelbarrow. He found some work gloves and put them on.

He could see by the patterns in the bedding that Kassie was restless—it was mostly pushed to the walls, the center nearly bare of straw. Working quickly, he scooped out the soiled bedding and manure, pushing the clean straw to one side. The wheelbarrow was nearly full by the time he was done.

Wheeling it to the manure pile, he saw Avery leading a bay stallion from the stable on the other side of the mating pen. He was a beautiful animal, with a coat of dark mahogany, his mane and tail black.

Kassie was standing by the fence, and upon closer inspection, JD saw she was tethered there, her back legs hobbled with rope. She was pawing the dirt with her front paws, turning back to gaze balefully at the General as he was led into the pen.

JD hurried back inside, eager to finish the stall before the action started. Retrieving fresh straw from the loft, he scattered it on the clay floor, blending it with what clean bedding remained.
He glanced at the wheelbarrow, telling himself he'd hose it down and put away the cleaning equipment later. He strode toward the mating pen, moving to stand beside Avery who was leaning against the outside of fence.

"Hey," JD said, coming to stand beside him.

Avery grunted a greeting without turning to look at him. He was focused on the horses. The General was sniffing at Kassie's tail. She tossed her silver mane and whinnied as she pulled against her restraints.

All at once the bay reared up on his hind legs, his huge, erect cock pointing like a divining rod toward the tethered mare. Falling against her, he maneuvered himself to enter her while she jerked and shimmied beneath him in a futile effort to dislodge him.

Leaning his long, powerfully-muscled neck over hers, he bit down, and Kassie stilled. Both men watched the stallion's thrusting movements. JD glanced sidelong at Avery, wondering what it would be like to bind his ankles to the fence like Kassie's, pulling the rope up between his legs and using it like a bridle to rein him in while he fucked him standing up.

JD moved closer to Avery, so close their shoulders were touching. Avery didn't move away. JD could feel the electricity shooting between them like a lightning storm. If he'd dared, he would have pulled Avery close then and there and yanked down his jeans.

Instead, his eyes fixed on the mating animals, he said softly, "Imagine it, Avery. Imagine being tied down like that and taken against your will. What's that like, do you ever wonder? What it would feel like to be bound, helpless in your restraints while someone used you for his pleasure?"

He knew he was going over the line with a man he barely knew, but his gut told him Avery would respond, based on his reaction to the pain comment the night before. JD's cock was itching for attention and the image of Avery, kneeling right there and then to service him, only made it harder. JD couldn't help the smile that curled onto his lips when he glanced down at Avery's crotch, which left no question as to the effect his questions had had upon him.

Rock, Paper, Scissor by Bobby Michaels

Rock, Paper, Scissors by Bobby Michaels can be purchased at Loose Id.

I’ve been cleaning out the TBR pile, and once again, before I’m halfway through the book, I ask myself what took me so long. This was another great read, to say the least.

I’ve always been very impressed with Bobby Michaels’ books because he breaks me out of my comfort zone just a bit—in so far as it isn’t the hearts and flowers romance I’m used to reading. Bobby’s writing is very raw and very male. Don’t get me wrong, he can write a romance that will have the hardest heart crying, but some of the things that turn his characters on aren't necessarily your everyday “turn-ons.”

Rock, Paper, Scissors was an awesome romance between two men—one, quite sure love and happily ever after aren't for him and the other, finally ready to admit that he is gay. I thought that everything moved way too quickly in the beginning but honestly, it didn’t really detract from the story. It was so easy to be sucked right into Brian and Tommy’s lives as their relationship grew into something deeper and loving.

I can say with conviction that if you haven’t read this story yet, it is definitely one you want to put at the top of your “To Be Bought” list.

I’m not sure if it is even a thought of the author, but I would very much love to see Tommy’s young son Tiger’s story in the future. I was just as invested in this intelligent seven year old as I was in our two heroes.

Length: Novel

Thomas Wells Atherton III, known as Tommy, the unbelievably wealthy scion of an old "Back Bay" Boston family has let the family down by being gay. After graduating from Harvard, rather than accepting a job arranged by his father with a prestigious Boston firm, Tommy heads for San Francisco where he can live openly as a gay man. He has only one small piece of baggage - Thomas Wells Atherton IV, better known as Tiger -- his son.

Even once he gets to San Francisco, Tommy has no intention of meeting anyone important. He's never been in love and isn't about to fall. Famous last words. Then into his office walks Brian Baldwin, muscular Irish construction worker. Tommy takes one look and he's a goner.

But Brian has come for a divorce, and Tommy's hopes are nearly dashed. When Brian admits he wants a divorce because he's gay, Tommy finds himself doing things and thinking things he's never thought about before, including bringing Brian home to meet Tiger.

And once they "sleep over" as Tiger would say, Brian never leaves.

Big Bad Wolf by Flesa Black

Big Bad Wolf by Flesa Black is available for purchase at Loose Id.

I enjoyed Big Bad Wolf; I especially loved the relationship between Rex and Vivien. They were both so unsure of the other, but once they had a reason to relate to one another ~ the feral werewolf attack ~ they both opened up very quickly. I think that they were both strong enough to take that risk. And the reactions of the people in town, Vivi’s employees and her Gran were marvelous! Two people, well-liked by everyone, finally figure out what others have known all along; very sweet. But oh my! There was also some very steamy, hot-and-heavy, sex as well... but all very much connected to the feelings that Rex and Vivi had for each other. Flesa Black did a great job with her characters and their growth.

.

As for the back-story of the feral attack and Vivien’s impending change, it was well done, but I did sometimes think that it went on a little too long. Not that I found that a big annoyance or anything, just one of those things that you notice. I’d definitely look for other stories by this author and happily put my money down. There really wasn’t a lot of werewolf activity per se and I thought that maybe there would be... but that was my assumption.

.

A good read that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a hot and sexy romance with a hint of something darker.

Carnal Powers: Some Like It Haunted by Moira Rogers
Reviewed by Kathy K.

Carnal Powers: Some Like it Haunted by Moira Rogers is available for purchase at Loose Id.

Review: The story description appealed to me mainly, I admit, because of the paranormal aspects. I enjoy stories where people have other senses that they can use to combat evil; if there’s a romance tied to it, all the better.

Moira Roger’s Carnal Powers: Some Like it Haunted was a real winner on both counts. The author is new-to-me, but I’ve already bookmarked the first book in the Carnal Powers series ~ Lost Hope ~ as one to get; I’ll also be following up on others as they are released. I can definitely see a number of stories available to the talented writing duo who are Moira Rogers. And from what I ascertained in this story I think that each story can standalone.

One thing that struck me almost from the beginning is the fact that neither Sara nor Reed thinks that they are good enough for the other. People can be so funny when emotions, especially strong emotions tied to sexual attraction, come into play. The fact that they have to share the prize and stay alone together in a haunted house on Halloween is the perfect remedy. They’ll have no-one else with whom to distract themselves and there’s enough wrong at Villa Montera that they’ll need to work together. I enjoyed as they began to talk and to actually hear what the other was saying rather than making all kinds of assumptions. They were both very likable people and I loved the development of their relationship.

The ghost story was even better than I had hoped; definitely elements of fun as well as some voyeurism, but there are times when it’s all serious as well.
So if you’re into the paranormal and enjoy a hot and steamy romance, then I definitely recommend Moira Rogers’ Carnal Powers: Some Like it Haunted.

When Sara wins the coveted Montera prize, she has to share her victory with her rival Reed. But Reed also stars in her guiltiest fantasies. Caught between a vengeful spirit and a lusty ghost, and they'll have to succumb to their passion to survive.

Book Description:

Reed can have any girl he wants—except the one who seems determined to make his professional life as difficult as possible. Sara’s been the number one paranormal researcher in their department for years, and she’s not one to let a lack of magical aptitude keep her from the top.

With Halloween drawing near Sara has one goal: to win the Montera Award and with it the chance to explore the town’s most haunted mansion. The one thing she didn’t count on was having to share the honor with her chief rival. Reed’s not just the strongest medium in town, but the star of some of her guiltiest fantasies—fantasies where she doesn’t always stay on top.

Giving in to the tension between them might lead to the best sex of their lives, but the rising sexual magic is potent enough to wake the true inhabitants of Villa Montera. Caught in the middle of a centuries-long rivalry between a vengeful spirit and a lusty ghost, Sara and Reed’s only hope for surviving the night is to make love, not war.

I’ve had this book in my library for a while and kept putting it off, to tell you the truth. It was because of the length—I’ve gotten a bit spoiled by the shorter stories—but I can tell you that by the time I finished reading 911, I was asking myself why it had taken me so long to read it. To say this book is packed with emotion is an understatement.

Chris Owens can definitely tell a story that keeps you interested from start to finish and begging for more. I found myself literally on the edge of my seat, afraid of what was going to happen next, because although you can feel the love between Drew and Scott and know it is real, at the same time you just know there is something missing in their relationship that keeps you wondering, are they it or is there more?

When EMT Eric joins the group in weekly poker games and soon moves in with Drew and Scott, things really start to get interesting for this trio. Will Eric’s presence in their lives be what ties them all together or tears them apart.

I very much enjoyed this book. I will admit that I thought there was a lot of filler—parts of the story that I felt were added more to up the word count than add to the story. Even so, I am not sorry I read this and would definitely suggest if you haven’t yet read this one, that you pick it up.

This was an enjoyable story, more so than I had originally thought it would be. It was fairly simplistic, but for all that it was still good read. I liked Julie and drooled like crazy over Gabe: I loved that he was so tied up in knots over her. As far as he was concerned Julie was vastly underappreciated. He liked Julie for who she was as a person. He was able to see beneath the mask she wore in an effort to protect herself. He hated that she would let her co-workers take advantage of her easy-going nature. At the same time that he wanted to protect, he knew enough that she had to learn to stand up for herself.

Julie was a pushover, no two ways about it. Most of her life she had wanted peace at any cost and the cost was usually her self-esteem. I know people like her, people so afraid of not being liked, not wanting to upset anyone that they become a door mat. And, as so often happens, people will take advantage.
I knew that there was hope for her when she realised that she went too far to keep peace, but she had no real reason to change... until her, seemingly, comfortable life crashed down around her.

This was not only a steamy and sexy romance, but it was a story of a woman finally learning that she had value and doing something about it.

Before I started One Shot I wasn’t sure what to expect: humour, drama, out-there-storytelling? I had no real expectations, just that it sounded like a very interesting premise and I'd take it from there. I ended up captivated and very emotionally involved with Nick and Riley.

The basic idea of unknown consequences of a world-wide vaccine is intriguing, especially with all the hue-and-cry over flu vaccinations today. It definitely speaks to current headlines, concerns and worries.

But Rowan McBride took that a couple ~ or even a dozen? ~ steps further and combined it with side-effects that are extremely imaginative and out-and-out fascinating.

I was intrigued by the idea of a vaccination doing more than it was touted to do ~ I’m a thriller intrigue fan as well ~ but what really got me hooked was that it was skewing statistics. Not usually something that I’d expect to find interesting, but Rowan McBride’s characters, especially Nick, really pulled it off.

Nick is just entranced with figures and spreadsheets, they talk to him on a level that’s almost spooky, but I really got how he felt when he was absorbed by them. For a writer to be able to take a reader into someone’s mind, into their thoughts and emotions, to the extent that I was into Nick’s, is a gift.

But what really kept me glued to the pages was Nick; who he is, the relationships that he has with his co-workers, his absolute clarity when it comes to numbers. Everything about him grabbed onto my imagination and the story took over from there. The relationship between Nick and especially Riley was amazing. Two men who see each other, and themselves, very differently and both learning not only about each other, but a lot about who they really are.
This is definitely going to be a re-read and a story that will not get old at any time in the foreseeable future.

Well done Mr. McBride... I've definitely fallen for your writing!

Book Description:

Nick Carlyle understands the intricacies of his job better than anyone. He lives to crunch those numbers and his skills are valued throughout the company. If his personal life might be lacking, he doesn't notice, especially whenever he steals a harmless glance or two at Riley Jameson's tight body. But he's the boss, and that means look but don't touch.

When a universal flu shot is developed, it's hailed as a miracle, and rightly so. But the seemingly harmless side effects begin to change the world, warping the statistics that Nick's always used to guide him through life. Everything he thought he knew is suddenly upside down.

No one changes as much as Riley. Suddenly the young man is bigger, stronger. He's also aggressive in ways Nick isn't prepared for, and for the first time analyzing the numbers does nothing to help the situation.

Now, his numbers only add up when it comes to Riley.

Description

An untriggered werewolf. A runaway Omega. It’s not easy fighting destiny.

Granite Lake Wolves, Book 2

Tad Maxwell’s workaholism serves to keep his bush-pilot company in the air, and his inner werewolf in check. In the two years since he discovered his heritage, he’s resisted the longing to test the power of his wolf side. It would mean compromising his human principles.

Then Missy Leason re-enters his life. Ten years ago, their teenage attraction never went beyond hand-holding. Now their chemistry is off the charts, pushing him closer to the step he’s not sure it’s safe to take, especially with a human.

But Missy is more like Tad than he realizes. She’s wolf too, and a wolf pack is a dangerous place to have secrets. Missy’s Alpha has sniffed out her carefully hidden Omega powers. Her first response: run from the corrupt Alpha’s plan to make her his mate. Step two: get to Tad, and hope like hell his untapped powers are strong enough to negate her own.

Every touch with Missy is hot, hot, hot, but even finding out she’s pure wolf doesn’t solve Tad’s dilemma. Is she using him, or are they truly destined mates? Only one thing is certain. He will defend her to his last breath—on his terms. Even if it means losing his life.

Red Rock Pass, Book 3

After a decade under a corrupt alpha’s thumb, Dylan Gennaro is still reeling from the changes in his life: a new home, a new alpha, a pack at war. Even normal things like an ending relationship. Still, when he’s asked to work with an outcast witch, he agrees without hesitation. Maybe by protecting her, he’ll rediscover his own inner strength. If, indeed, it exists.

Sasha Wallace lost her mentor in a vicious attack that left her scarred in spirit as well as body. While she’s grateful for the refuge offered by the Red Rock alpha, it’s tough living with the pack’s suspicion. Even though—or maybe because—she’s willing to use her powers to help them fight their war. Except for Dylan. When she’s finally free to find a new home, he’ll be the only one she regrets leaving behind.

Their attraction is a balm to their wounded hearts, until their journey for knowledge brings them face to face with a terrifying vampire. Neither has the strength for this fight—but if they can let go of their pasts and trust each other, they might just be able to do it. Together.
